How to Select Electrode Materials for an Electromagnetic Flow Meter
— Corrosion Resistance Determines Service Life
The electrode is the most "delicate" component of an electromagnetic flow meter.
Selecting electrode materials based on the corrosiveness of the medium:
316L stainless steel: Clean water, mildly corrosive media
Hastelloy C: Strong acids such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid
Titanium electrode: Seawater, chlorine-containing media
Tantalum, platinum-iridium: Strong oxidizing acids and highly corrosive environments
Tungsten carbide, ceramic: Abrasive slurry
For media that are prone to scaling or fouling, he recommends selecting scraper-type electrodes or models with self-cleaning functionality.
For the food and pharmaceutical industries, 316L polished electrodes with sanitary certification are required.
